For Atkin, the white La Sombrilla 2019 deserves a score of 98 points out of 100. "A wine with great minerality and complexity", testifies the regular BBC contributor, who added that "the texture is driven by lively acidity, which is added to the depth and complexity of the wine".
Likewise, Atkin tasted the other two plots that Bodegas El Paraguas produces individually in the Avia Valley of the D.O. Ribeiro and in the Ferrol parish of Esmelle. About Fai un Sol de Carallo 2019, which Atkin has scored 96 points, highlights its "delicate integration of wood"; while about Astillero 2021, the English disseminator comments that there is "a humid and earthy character" in the wine.

La Sombrilla 2021 and Fai un Sol de Carallo 2021, on sale in a few days

La Sombrilla 2021 and Fai un Sol de Carallo 2021, on sale in a few days

From next September 15th, the new vintages of the three plot wines made in the D.O. Ribeiro and in the Ferrol parish of Esmelle by Bodegas El Paraguas will be at your disposal in wine bars and specialized stores. Find out from your distributor or ask your trusted sommelier about the emerging harvests of La Sombrilla 2021, Fai un Sol de Carallo 2021 and Astillero 2022.
The latest wine in the Bodegas El Paraguas portfolio, Astillero 2022, comes from a very scarce vintage, from which only 185 bottles have been produced in a quarter-hectare vineyard. Astillero 2022 is a wine made entirely from the Blanco Legítimo grape variety, documented as the oldest variety in Galicia. After the grapes were harvested in small boxes, they underwent a table selection process grain by grain and, then, the elaboration took place in a 500-liter stainless steel tank in contact with their skins for 4 months and a half.
Likewise, at the end of summer the 'top' wine Fai un Sol de Carallo 2021 sees the light of day. A white made from a selection of clusters from the La Cabrita vineyard, planted in 1892 by Felicísimo Pereira's great-grandfather and cultivated by the family of the company's owner and technical director since then. Barely 780 bottles of this wine fermented and aged for a year in a new 600-litre French oak barrel.
Lastly, La Sombrilla 2021 completes the trio of wines that will go on the market from September 15th. A white made from a selection of bunches of Treixadura and Albariño that come from the A Castiñeira estate. 40% of the wine was fermented and aged in second-use French oak barrels, while the rest of the clusters were produced in a steel tank with their fine lees. When both wines completed their elaboration, the final coupage of La Sombrilla 2021 was undertaken.

The wines of Bodegas El Paraguas repeat success in the 2024 Guía Peñín

The wines of Bodegas El Paraguas repeat success in the 2024 Guía Peñín

The latest edition of the most accredited wine guides in Spanish, the 2024 Guía Peñín, has advanced in its online version the scores of the whites produced by Bodegas El Paraguas, qualifying all the wines presented by the Galician firm with more than 93 points out of 100, an assessment that places the white wines from the producer among the best in Spain for another year and as indisputable benchmarks on the Galician scene.
On this occasion, Bodegas El Paraguas determined the shipment of La Sombrilla 2020 and Fai un Sol de Carallo 2019 wines, rated 93 and 94 points out of 100 respectively, which guarantees them a podium in the XXIII Salón de los Mejores Vinos de España in November. For its part, the wine El Paraguas Atlántico 2021 was considered by the editors of the guide with 93 points out of 100.
Although the great news for the Galician winery was the score of 95 points out of 100 for its latest local wine, the white Astillero 2021, the second harvest of the wine made in the Ferrol parish of Esmelle, in the northernmost vineyard in Galicia, was recognized by the 2024 Guía Peñín as the best wine made from the Blanco Legítimo grape variety in the publication.

2023 harvest, another vintage with great dedication to the vineyard

2023 harvest, another vintage with great dedication to the vineyard

A few days before the start of the harvest at Bodegas El Paraguas and if nature does not dictate another sentence, 2023 is announced as a warm and early harvest compared to the average of recent years in the vineyards that the Galician company works in the Ribeiro Denomination of Origin.
After coming from a summer of 2022 with cuts in water supplies for the population of Ribadavia, November and December were among the rainiest months in a long time. The field needed to store water resources and it sure did. We went from drought to overflowing rivers in two months and early January, until the Azores' anticyclone returned, in the freezing months of January and February.
March remained dry until the 7th, when the south wind returned -therefore, higher temperatures and a return to the rains- and sprouting started. Spring began with temperatures above the usual average for these dates. April was the hottest in Spain for as long as there are records, and it was also very hot in Galicia, although it enjoyed some occasional rains that caused a lot of work in the vineyard. May was very dry, with rainfall for two days at the end of the month in the Ribeiro.
June left the sunny days for ten days of precipitation until June 19th, when the sun and heat returned. Since the beginning of July, the rainy episodes have been interspersed with hot days, causing many diseases in the vineyard. Luckily, from the end of July, the summer became dry and hot, bringing forward the vegetative cycle. We hope to harvest a small quantity, but of excellent quality.
