Julia Konstanzer puts the Austrian accent in Bodegas El Paraguas
Julia Konstanzer, an oenologist licensed by the University of Vienna, has joined Bodegas El Paraguas for the elaboration, side by side, with the technical direction assumed by Felicísimo Pereira of the white wine that the Galician firm vinifies in Ferrol, in the province of A Coruña.

The wine made with the clusters of the Blanco Legítimo variety from the vineyard that Bodegas El Paraguas cultivates in the parish of Esmelle - the northernmost of Spain - is the first time that it is vinified in the facilities that the Galician firm has in the nearby parish of Cobas, also the Ferrol area.
This is the fifth vintage that Bodegas El Paraguas produces experimentally, after the successful steps previously taken in collaboration with the Xunta de Galicia, thanks to the immeasurable support of the CFEA from Guísamo for four consecutive harvests, which gave their facilities for the first vinifications of Bodegas El Paraguas in the Esmelle vineyard.
In this harvest 2019, under the baton of Konstanzer, Bodegas El Paraguas has opted for a selection of grapes grain by grain, stripping for eight hours in shifts of four people each cluster collected in the Ferrolan parish. Previously, the fruits of Blanco Legítimo went through a cold chamber for 40 hours before starting the meticulous process of selecting a wine that is fermenting with its skins.
Marcial Pita, co-owner of Bodegas El Paraguas with Felicísimo Pereira, has acknowledged feeling very fortunate for the pair of winemakers who materialize Ferrol's first quality wine. "On Tuesday, Julia was finishing the harvest and making the family vineyards on her land, Burgenland, the most recognized wine area in Austria. On Wednesday she flew in the afternoon to Galicia and on Thursday, early in the morning, she was already supervising the fruit in the Esmelle vineyard. It's a different point of view from Felicísimo and I think that both winemakers made something clear after this little project."

For the fifth consecutive year, Bodegas El Paraguas is listed as one of the most outstanding wineries and as an indispensable reference of the 2020 Wine Guide published by the prestigious Grupo Gourmets. An assessment that is accentuated among the 1,119 referenced wineries and the 4,360 wines tasted in the publication.
An achievement apprehended after having reached the Honor Roll of the Best Wines of Spain for the fifth time followed with all the white wines produced by the Galician firm and submitted to the publication, appearing its labels in the central pages of the guide.
A blind tasting, where the jury can not intuit their favorite wines, in which the white wine El Paraguas Atlántico has emerged greatly reinforced, receiving a rating of 93 out of 100. This rating is, at the same time, the highest awarded to a white wine with some wood aging throughout the Ribeiro Denomination of Origin, area where the Galician company wine is born.

The fifth vintage of the wine Fai un Sol de Carallo, 2017, will begin its commercialization next February, just as it did in the previous harvest. As it happened in the previous vintages and because Bodegas El Paraguas only bottles the selected fruits of a specific payment, production is tremendously limited, only 776 bottles.
Fai un Sol de Carallo 2017 is a wine conceived in the D.O. Ribeiro with the triumvirate of great Galician native grapes: Treixadura, Albariño and Godello. A wine made from a selection of clusters from vines located in the most favored socalcos or terraces of an own vineyard and that have been made entirely in a 600-liter barrel, brought from a tiny Burgundy oak tree. After twelve months of aging in second-use wood, the resulting wine has remained in the bottle until it is commercialized.
In the municipality of Ribadavia there is La Viña la Cabrita where the clusters of Treixadura, Albariño and Godello come from, that make up Fai un Sol de Carallo 2017. Located at an altitude above sea level between 220 and 341 feet, the vineyard where the white wine Fai un Sol de Carallo is born is composed of sandy soils of granite base and was planted in 1892, after phylloxera.

The 2019 vintage at Bodegas El Paraguas reminds the classic vintages that bathed the Ribeiro twenty years ago. A clearly Atlantic harvest, with a high quality grape that promises to offer long-lasting wines. Tension, freshness, authenticity and complexity are the attributes that define it so far.
After a hard winter January, February was one of the hottest in decades, leading to the sprouting of the first buds of the Avia Valley to March 1. This winter was the driest since 1965, with an exceptional March. April, however, was more common, rainy, with a hailstorm on April 7 that slightly affected the leaves and another more intense on April 25 that did quite a lot of damage. Spring continued under usual standards in May and June, with mild temperatures and episodes of interspersed rains. July was mild and very dry, with a couple of rainy fronts on July 25 and 27 that gave way to a very bad first decade of August. The rest of the summer was mild, with September being the best of the months until the harvest.
Finally, the collects in small boxes of the clusters of Treixadura, Godello and Albariño that Bodegas El Paraguas manages was delayed, around one week compared to the average of the last twenty harvests, being a vintage without complications in the elaborating property.
