Bodegas El Paraguas receives the award for Best Wine in Spain
For the second time in its short history, Bodegas El Paraguas obtains the highest recognition from the Asociación Española de Periodistas y Escritores del Vino (AEPEV) for the wine El Paraguas Atlántico.

The main wine of the Galician winery has been named Best Wine of Spain in the category of white wines at the contest that annually performs the association presided over by José Luis Murcia.
Marcial Pita, ideologue and owner of Bodegas El Paraguas together with Felicísimo Pereira, collected the award during a gala meal that took place in Moriles (Córdoba) and which was attended by the authorities of the region of Andalusia and accredited national and international journalists.
Although Bodegas El Paraguas does not present its wines to competitions, the VIII Edition of the Mejores Vinos y Espirituosos de España is a different contest, since they are the members of the AEPEV, who in a double round vote decide which Spanish wines must compete for this award.
A vote in which more than 90% of its members have taken part and in which they have had to decide among the 1,055 marks proposed in the first phase of the contest, of which a total of 143 wines and 41 spirits passed to the end in the 11 chapters to which they chose. A very rigorous qualification system that has resulted in the prize for the wine El Paraguas Atlántico 2015.

Frost and why our winery is called El Paraguas

Late April and a cold front sweeps most of the vineyards of Central Europe, reaching the northern half of Spain. Bodegas El Paraguas gets prepared for two nights that, finally, were terrifying for the national vineyard. More specifically, in the Valle del Avia which the Galician firm works in Ribeiro, the frost devastated a good part of the vineyards located in the low parts, being saved of the hard weather the high zones. Strains which vegetative cycle was already very advanced for this time of the year and practically irrecoverable for the 2017 vintage.
On this situation, Bodegas El Paraguas feared for one of its most precious goods, Viña La Cabrita, where the Fai un Sol de Carallo and much of El Paraguas Atlántico wines are born. But what most people do not know is that the origin of the name of the winery is due to a mountain facing the payment, which should act as a natural umbrella in these extreme conditions of freezing and fleeting thawing. And so he did, for the first time in more than six years of history of Bodegas El Paraguas, the mountain made as a natural umbrella to avoid the damage of our strains. If everything goes well and nature does not stop, there will be wines from that iconic plot in 2017.

El Paraguas Atlántico 2016, sold out in winery in advanced

Following the begining of the commercialization of El Paraguas Atlántico 2016, Bodegas El Paraguas has already allocated the final quota among all its customers, distributed in ten countries, exhausting their stocks until the next harvest in the spring of 2018.
A white wine that you can enjoy through your usual dealer or in specialized stores, which has been vinified with 87% of Treixadura and that has been assembled with 9% of Godello and 4% of Albariño. A wine that is born after the interpretation of the nature of the vintages by Bodegas El Paraguas, but always offers a very identifiable common style.
In this 2016 vintage, the wine displays in nose very elegant odors of white fruits (apple and pear) along with citrus (lime) and pleasant tones of hay. Later floral (mimosas and chamomile) and lavender notes appear and give it character and personality over a saline bottom in which the wood accompanies very faintly. On the other hand, it is tasty and fatty in the mouth, enjoying a silky step, with an excellent combination of fruit and acidity. Very expressive, with outstanding complexity and persistence. Marked balsamic and citric notes at the end, leaving a pleasant memory of fruit in its aftertaste.

Appointment Schedule of Bodegas El Paraguas
Bodegas El Paraguas travels to Bordeaux and Guernica to explain our wine project and is required by the most important prescribers to evaluate the latest vintages thrown to the street by the Galician house. The American James Suckling or the taster for Spain in The Wine Advocate, Luis Gutiérrez (among others) will value in a few days the wines of the Galician house.
